James Michael Tyler

James Michael Tyler was an American actor who was born the youngest of five kids on May 28, 1962, in Greenwood, Mississauga. He carries the name of his uncle. Tyler’s was born in Winona, Mississippi.

He graduated from Anderson College (now Anderson University) in 1982 and Clemson University with a degree in Geology in 1984. During his college time he joined student theater group, the Clemson Players. In 1988 he moved to Los Angeles and became a production assistant on the film Fat Man and Little Boy and became an assistant director.

From 1994 to 2004, James Michael Tyler played Gunther on the Sitcom Friends. He this led to a ten year career appearances in 148 of Friends’ 263 episodes. He is the show’s most frequently-appearing recurring character actor. In honour of Friends’ 20th anniversary Tyler made appearances at a central Perk replica in SoHo.

Tyler appeared in BBC/Showtime sitcom Episodes (series 2, episode 6) as himself playing an ice hockey coach, when Matt LeBlanc tries unsuccessfully to get the other main stars from Friends’ to appear in the promotional video for the functional television show Pucks.

He was 59 years old. Tyler died “peacefully died in his home” on Sunday according to a statement by his long-time manager Toni Benson. The actor played in 150 episodes of “friends” under the name of Gunther, who carried an undisputed love to Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).

The world knew him as Gunther the seventh ‘Friend’, but Michael’s relatives knew him as an actor musician, cancer sensitizer and loving husband”, the statement said. In the June, the actor revealed that he was receiving chemotherapy following a diagnosis of stage 4 prostate cancer. Tyler told on the Today show, “I am sorry to say that I’m not appearing today with you to announce there’s ‘Friends’ movie”.

He also said, “Actually I’m here to let you know that in September of 2018, I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer”. Tyler was hoping to attend HBO Max “Friends” meeting in May, but said he pulled out because of his health. Tyler said, “I wanted to be a part of that, and initially I was going to be on the stage.

It was my decision not to be part of that physically and make an appearance on Zoom, basically, because I didn’t wanna bring a downer on it. I didn’t want to be like. Oh, and by the way Gunther has cancer”.

Tyler doctors revealed his cancer through a routine physical examination, where he underwent his first prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Although his early prognosis was “optimistic”, Tyler said that the cancer mutated during the pandemic, spreading to his bones and spine, which prevented her from walking.

Tyler told in Today, “While he expressed for not getting tested sooner, Tyler became an advocate for early testing”. He said, “My goal this past year was to see my 59th birthday. I did that. My goal now is to help save at least one life by coming out with this new”.

He continued to perform in recent years while undergoing treatment for cancer. He also started for two short films “The Gesture” and “The Word”, and processing winning best actor awards at film festivals.

Co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane credited Tyler for the character’s evolution in a statement Sunday to USA TODA, “James was a genuinely kind, sweet man. When he started as an extra on ‘Friends’, his unique spirit caught our eye and we knew we had to make him a character. He made Gunther’s unrequited love incredibly relatable”.

Benson said, “Even three days ago, he said to me how proud he was to win awards for his short films”. In 2021, Tyler’s oral performance of Stephen Kalinich’s poem “If You Knew” was translated into short video to raise awareness for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The Clemson university graduate had worked as a barista at Los Angeles’ Bourgeois Pig coffee shop. The aspirant actor has appeared on “Sabrina the teenage witch” and “Just Shoot Me!” before landing the Career changing “Friend” role.

Tyler is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno, who was described in the statement as the “the love of his life, ever united in good times, in sickness and for eternity.
